THE CHPT3 STORY
THE NEW CHAPTER
EVERY PERSON
HAS A THIRD
CHPT3 is a cycling lifestyle brand, we believe every person has three chapters in their life: family, work and play. Too many people have forgotten the playful chapter in their life – their third chapter. Cycling, in all its forms, benefits the body and the mind of men and women of all ages. CHPT3 exists to design and produce the products and share the lifestyle that cycling can inspire in all its forms, out on the road, adventures on dirt, navigating through streets, indoor training – we do it all and we want to inspire you to do the same and find the playfulness in life – your own third chapter.
CHPT3 WAS CREATED BY FORMER PROFESSIONAL CYCLIST DAVID MILLAR IN 2015 WITH THE VISION OF CREATING CYCLING CLOTHING THAT HE WOULD WEAR AS A RETIRED RACER. NOW, WE MAKE CYCLING KIT TO MEET YOU WHEREVER YOUR RIDE TAKES YOU.
THE THIRD CHAPTER
CHAPTER THREE
There is no clear path for a retired professional cyclist. Each makes their own; with mixed degrees of success and, needless to say, failure. What we do have in common is that when our career does end the one thing that we are the greatest experts of we can no longer do, either physically, or mentally. Sometimes both.
This is somewhat ironic and goes contrary to most professional lives. So when it comes to the end it is safe to say that all professional cyclists are aware they are about to begin anew.
WITHOUT FAIL WE ARE ASKED, “SO, WHAT IS THE NEXT CHAPTER?” INSTEAD OF STAYING WITHIN THE CLOISTERED WORLD OF PROFESSIONAL RACING I DECIDED TO MOVE IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION, ONE THAT WOULD ALLOW ME TO USE EVERYTHING I’D LEARNT OVER MY 18-YEAR RACING CAREER.
Steve was always adamant that he wanted CHPT3 x Castelli to be known for making cycling clothing a pro cyclist would wear when not racing. Steve and I had spent 10 years together designing cycling race-clothing, developing some of the game-changing garments that have become the norm in the process, now it was about doing something different with all that shared experience and working knowledge: creating technical cycling clothing that was equally technical – if not more so – than the race wear. That first collection will always remain the purest, there was nothing else out there like it and it proved to be not only difficult but expensive to manufacture. Throughout its design was my rebellion to 18 years of not having control of how I looked on the bike. It is, I hope – we hope – what every professional cyclist would elect to wear if they had the choice of any cycling apparel in the world.
And if it is the choice of a professional cyclist for when they’re not racing then we hope that anybody can wear it and derive the same satisfaction that they’re wearing something designed for a reason, based in performance, existing in style. A philosophy that remains true to what we continue to do today. Albeit own-made.
What ensued was the first CHPT3 x Castelli collection. It launched in the late summer of 2015 with what was, in hindsight, a very quick turnaround (tech apparel manufacturers generally consider 18 months the norm from conception to delivery), the original conversation with the boss of Castelli, Steve Smith, having happened at the 2014 Vuelta Espana.
In fact, the whole launch collection remains very purest in its design ethos & yet, counter-intuitively, very complicated to produce. I was, in a way, rebelling against the lightweight simplicity, sometimes expendable quality, & often terrible surface design of the race wear. I wanted the clothing to keep, if not better the race tech, yet be over-engineered in order to feel more luxurious & look more structured and, to a degree, tailored.
THE SECOND CHAPTER
CHAPTER TWO
The founding of CHPT3 was not the first time David had faced a new beginning. His career can be divided in two, the first part ended in destruction, the second part involved returning to the sport with a resolution and a mission that led to eventual redemption.
It was in the second chapter that David learnt to appreciate the value of the journey, the difference between winning and losing became insignificant, that acceptance allowed him to fall in love with cycling all over again. He won races, became a team owner, an anti-doping crusader, an activist for unionisation, an author, and a husband and father. It’s where he learnt that next chapters do exist, it’s what allowed him to believe there could be a third chapter.
THE FIRST CHAPTER
CHAPTER ONE
“I HAD TWO PASSIONS THAT WENT WITH ME EVERYWHERE, ART AND BIKES. YET IT WAS THE BIKE THAT ENDED UP TAKING ME PLACES.” – DAVID MILLAR
We all have a first chapter. David has two passions that go with him everywhere, art and bikes. Yet it was the bike that ended up taking him places. By the time he was 23, he was leading France’s number one professional team and being tipped to one day win the Tour de France. He chased yellow, wore a rainbow, then it all came crashing down when he was 26. The first chapter came to an end.
